Tommy Oswald – Homeboy Co.
Homeboy Coffee may, from the outside, seem like any regular café; however, it has been taking the internet by storm, and its unique vibes and feel-good energy set it apart from the rest. So, what’s the driving factor behind this coffee shop’s youthfulness and authenticity? Actually, it’s not a what, but rather a who. Meet Tommy Oswald, an Australian nineteen-year-old who has used his love for creativity, business, and most of all community, to build not just a successful and eclectic café, but a brand and an experience.

At the age of eighteen, in the side of a small art shop, with money granted to him by the store owner, and absolutely zero ability to make a decent cup of coffee, he opened his business. On opening day there was not a person to be found, but he continued to push on through, documenting the entire experience for social media. Before he knew it, his account went viral, and it was all he could to keep up with the daily rushes.

With the help of Restoring Adelaide, an organization in his community, he was finally able to open an independent café. The sleek college town shop draws large crowds with its atmosphere, specialty crafted coffees, and delicious “sandos” (his unique sandwiches). Tommy says his goal is to make it feel like you’re just hanging out at a friend’s house. He also designs original merch for Homeboy Coffee to incorporate yet another level of creativity into his business.
Tommy continues to document his journey, which he cleverly refers to as season one and two, and invites people to follow along, allowing the world to grow with him as he learns the ropes in business and has fun while doing it. His vivacity for life is inspiring, and he encourages people to take risks and dive into the deep end even if they have no idea what they are doing.

His coffee shop sure has a unique set up! I think of it as playing “chef” as a kid from a PlaySkool house window! Perhaps it is the nostalgia factor that brings in so many customers. It is really cool that he is able to foster community through his business at such a young age.
That is an incredible and interesting story. Tommy Oswald seems to know how to use his natural skills and abilities to build a business. What is more, it seems like he has an acute ability to know his customer base. Oswald uses some great tools to foster a sense of community and brand loyalty among his customers.
I’ve heard of Homeboy coffee before and it seems like a really cool coffee shop. Tommy for sure has the skills to be a successful entrepreneur and it’s awesome to see someone my ages pursing their dreams. If I ever get the chance, I’d love to try some of his coffee.
