Ryan Kelley – Ryan’s Barkery (Ry’s Ruffery)

Daniela and Ryan Kelly making a pitch

Sometimes opportunities simply come out of our interests and passions. This is no less true for Ryan Kelley, a young 11-year-old entrepreneur who appeared on season 4 of the show Shark Tank. Ryan came up with his idea of homemade dog treats after he was disgusted by the smell of the treats that he had bought for his new dog. Soon Ryan found out his dog didn’t like the taste either and decided to create some of his own treats. Ryan began by selling his treats door to door to his neighbors, and after everyone loved them, he decided to try his luck on Shark Tank.

When Ryan appeared on Shark Tank, he had only made about $800 but through the show he acquired an investment of $25,000 for a 25% stake of the company. After accepting the offer Ryan began to sell over $10K a month and eventually secured orders from Target and Petco stores. Sadly, after Ryan’s mother passed away in 2018 the business dropped off but in the time it was in business it had made over $7.7 million in sales.

I really like how Ryan found a pain that wasn’t really affecting any humans, but rather a pain shown by his dog. I have never personally owned a pet but I can attest that all the dog treats I have come across do not have a pleasant smell. Along with that, the smell “sticks” to your hands and follows you everywhere. I am curious to know if his idea was picked up by another company after his mother’s passing.
