Michael Knowles and the Birth of Mayflower Cigars: Tradition, Independence, and Family Memory

Michael Knowles, commentator and Daily Wire host, introduced his cigar company, Mayflower Cigars, in late 2023 a dream rooted in his passion for premium tobacco and a broader cultural message. The company name “Mayflower” honors the ship Knowles’ ancestors arrived on, connecting the brand to classic tradition and American values. Knowles sees cigars as an alternative to “the liberal establishment’s push” for pharmaceuticals and recreational drugs, positioning nicotine as a symbol of liberty and enjoyment—a sentiment he discussed with Tucker Carlson, who praised nicotine as “a massive life-enhancer” and criticized government regulation of the industry.

Knowles’ love of cigars began at 15, gifted his first box by his mother and supplied by Bronx rollers. The significance of the cigar company that supplies Michael Knowles’ cigars is deeply personal and symbolic for him. The company is Oliva Cigars, which played a special role in his life story. As a teen, Knowles received a box of Oliva Series O cigars as a Christmas present from his mother, who passed away unexpectedly not long after. He cherished this box, saving the remaining cigars for meaningful life events such as graduating high school, getting married, and having his first child.

Years later, when starting his own cigar line, Mayflower Cigars, Knowles sought out Oliva specifically he wanted a brand that reflected both patriotic and elevated qualities. Through a fortunate backstage connection, he was able to partner with Oliva for the production of Mayflower Cigars. The cigars for his company are made at the same factory that produced the special box his mother gave him, turning the company’s role into a providential link between family memory, tradition, and his brand’s story. This connection gives the supplier unique meaning for Knowles, blending personal history with the product he sells. He wrote his college admissions essay to Yale University on cigars and started a cigar club, SIGAR, to fund his interest. He pitched the cigar company idea to Daily Wire for years; in 2022, they gave him free rein, letting him choose branding, blends, and the factory.

Despite regulatory hurdles, a chance encounter with a member of Congress led Knowles to Oliva Cigar Co. of Nicaragua, making legal launch possible and ensuring strict attention to blend quality. Mayflower launched with two blends, Dawn and Dusk, in multiple sizes. Their debut far exceeded expectations, selling four months of inventory in 36 hours and shipping over 285,000 cigars, generating more than $3.6 million in its first year.

Mayflower reflects Knowles’ hands-on approach and is tightly woven with conservative politics, with cigars and nicotine presented as symbols of tradition and resistance to the “nanny state.” On Carlson’s podcast, Knowles said tobacco a cornerstone of American society still unites those who value independence and satisfaction. For Knowles, Mayflower is both a personal mission and commercial success, the culmination of his 15-year dream, animated by tradition and the momentum of a conservative movement reclaiming the pleasures of life through cigars.

this is very impressive to tackle so many brands for something so small.
