Shayne Coplan – Polymarket

From a college dropout and one who could not pay his rent, Shayne Coplan is now the youngest self-made billionaire in the world. In the summer of 2020, right in the heart of the covid pandemic, Shayne Coplan was so broke he had to take inventory of New York apartment to sell his possessions to pay rent. At that point, the 21-year-old who had long dreamed about ruling the crypto world had “nothing to lose.” Working out of a makeshift bathroom office, Shayne Coplan created Polymarket.
A year prior Coplan had turned to economist Robin Hanson to learn about predicting the markets. In the wake of the pandemic, Coplan saw the perfect opportunity to develop an app for individuals wanting to bet on real-world outcomes as they were stuck at home. His company, Polymarket, has since grown to a valuation of $9 billion thanks to investments such as $150 million from Founder Fund and $2 billion from corporations such as New York Stock Exchange’s parent company Intercontinental Exchange Inc.
It has not all been smooth sailing for Coplan though; the FBI raided Coplan’s New York City apartment after allegations of illegal trading stemming from Polymarkets correct and controversial wagering in Donal Trump’s favors in bets on who would win the presidential election. As a result, lots of valuable equipment was confiscated. Yet the company has since pushed through and soared higher than Coplan could have imagined.
Learning about how quickly one can not only change their life, but also the lives of millions around them during such a dark time both personally and nationally is very inspiring. With minimal resources and training Coplan was able to successfully build on an already lucrative market and take it in a whole new direction, opening up an almost entirely new market in which Coplan and Polymarket has continued to thrive.

Coplan’s story is certainly unique and not without drama, and it is extremely impressive that he went from practically nothing to being a billionaire. I would want to learn more about what Polymarket actually is and what it does and how it compares to any other business that does similar things.
This was such a fascinating read- at every turn I found myself unable to even begin to guess what turn it could take next! This was such a good idea- it really goes to show that sometimes having a good idea is all about timing! It’s so interesting what he was able to accomplish during such a hard period of his life and how he was able to turn it around!
