Alexandr Wang – Scale AI

A boy’s young aptitude for math and computer programing sets the stage for him to become the world’s youngest self-made billionaire at age 24. Alexandr Wang is a second generation American; he made a pivotal decision at age 19 to drop out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to co-found a start-up, Scale AI, that now influences the future of AI. Excellent entrepreneurial leaders must find ways to employ innovation, make decisions, and take wise risks. It can be extra challenging to be a young leader; yet, Alexandr succeeded. What did he do?

Leadership
As the CEO of Scale AI from 2016-2025 Alexandr held a significant role of leadership and grew the company to 1,000 plus employees. He abandoned the hiring status quo of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and adamantly decided to take a merit-based approach where they hire the most qualified individuals: the MEI hiring policy. MEI stands for merit, excellence, and intelligence – the key attributes he requires – not contingent on an applicant’s background, ethnicity, or population characteristics. He believes excellence can come from many backgrounds; thus, his MEI policy does not limit diversity. He himself has a multicultural background as his parents are immigrants from China.

Decision and Risk
Dropping out of MIT was risky but an important decision Alexandr made. It was not uncalculated, however. His childhood and previous experiences, presumably, gave him the insight he needed to make a well-calculated decision. His parents were both physicists and he qualified for the U.S. Physics Team; these likely served as invaluable learning experiences, assured his skills, and provided some built-in support network. He was a finalist in the U.S. Computing Olympiad (two years in a row); high pressure situations could not have been new to him. Additionally, he had corporate job experience under his belt because he had worked at Hudson River Trading as an algorithm developer. His experience goes beyond this, but these capture some of the highlights. So yes, he made a decision, a risky decision, but there were many precursors that superseded it.

Young entrepreneurs can be highly successful, but they must apply leadership and innovation, and know when/how to take risks; these are some of the critical reasons why Alexandr Wang found great success.

I like your comment about him talking about dropping out of MIT and how that was a big risk. I think it is important for all of us to be willing to take risks as entreprenuers.

Dropping out of MIT shows crazy dedication, but taking that risk was needed for his success. Taking risks when we are young is the most important skill to have when wanting to be successful.

I think that him taking the risk of dropping out of MIT was really inspiring. Taking risks is really important in business ventures and I feel like this reinforces the idea.
