Sean Leary and Sports Thread

Sean Leary had always dreamed of playing college baseball at the division one level and coming out of high school it seemed like he had achieved that goal by committing to Pepperdine university with a full scholarship. However shortly after pepperdine baseball was hit with a huge scandal involving recruiting violations causing them to have to pull all scholarships. This left Sean devastated as he knew he didn’t have enough money to pay out of pocket and go to school. After this Sean attended  JUCO school and eventually made his way to Oral Roberts where he raised 1 million dollars and created a Sports thread. Leary said his inspiration for the app was his experience with Pepperdine and how he felt that since the athletes didn’t do anything wrong that they shouldn’t have been punished with a loss of scholarship. He said that after meeting with lots of other athletes who dealt with similar stories he wanted to create his app. Sports thread can be used for many different things most notably it helps high school athletes connect to schools and coaches. With the help of many great entrepreneurs like Marc Randolph he launched his app and business. Although it started slow it eventually began being used rapidly across the country. However all of that came to a halt during covid. He said this was the most challenging time for his company because there weren’t any sports happening.Despite this however he kept working and since covid has helped more than 10,000 kids receive athletic scholarships and has helped kids save over 100million dollars in scholarships. What is so inspiring about his story is how many times he was challenged and how that caused him to work even harder than before and eventually built a company that still helps people and still gives back.

I think Sean Leary’s story is interesting and is relatable to a lot of athletes. The feeling of having circumstances pushed on you just because you are a part of a team and not because you did anything wrong is very common. I think having an app that helps connect high school athletes with college coaches has a very wide market and is a great idea.
