SHIFT dance – Kelsey Ang
Kelsey Ang was trained as a dancer in Hong Kong and the Philippines. She later moved to Los Angeles and graduated from Loyola Marymount University. For her senior thesis project she started the business SHIFT dance, an international platform that connects dancers worldwide. Its ultimate goal is to connect people all over the world through the virtual learning of dance. She has a lot of different types of classes ranging from an in-person summer intensive class to workshops and private lessons.
She had come from an Asian family that often told her that dance is only a hobby. That you could not make good money of off it. Yet she persevered in her pursuit of dance and now runs a successful business based entirely upon teaching it. With the entrepreneurial spirit that she holds she had turned her passion into something that could sustain her.
In describing her entrepreneurial journey, she had this to say: “I want to be excited about what I am doing so that I can continue to learn, grow and be curious. Everyone is unique and has different things that they are good at and they are passionate about. When pursuing their own passions, each person is able to bring value to the world in different ways.” So many people of my generation have passions that they disregard because they consider other paths “more practical,” but Kelsey shows us that this does not need to be the case at all. Passion is an essential ingredient to starting any successful business.
