Royce Branning and Oliver Hill
Royce and Oliver are among the first to grow up in the generation of social media. In their 20s they saw a need to address the way phones are increasingly disturbing work, quality time with loved ones, and people’s ability to be present. Thus, they created a social media platform called “Clearspace”. The app helps people rebuild their phone habits and save them hours upon hours of unwanted screen time. The app intercepts opens of social media apps and requires breathing exercises and/or pushups/squats before fully opening the app. This allows people to think before they start scrolling. It may have them think “do I need to be on my phone right now?”. These quick efforts can help prevent unnecessary screen time while also promoting exercise. This app is monitored by AI, further showing how much of an impact AI has on our current generation. Overall, this app helps reduce impulsive social media users that distract themselves throughout the day with their phones. Many people do not even know they do it. However, with this app, people can take back their lives without the need of instant gratification. Growing up in the first generation of social media, Royce and Oliver were able to see how and where people spend their time. Royce and Oliver have showed a real need for action as our phones have become an addiction that not enough people try to control. Now, the app is valued around $20 million with thousands of users wanting a change in their consumption of social media.

I like how the platform helps people to think before mindlessly getting on social media. I love how the users made the app to eliminate instant gratification.
We live in an era with some really damaging digital habits that everyone is aware of – but also that everyone seems to ignore. This is a good example of profitable businesses that also have a social impact because they target health and well-being. I love that exercise is one of the options, because it gives your brain those chemicals that it seeks in a healthy way. Super interesting app!
