Bunim Laskin – Swimply

Bunim Laskin is the prototypical grinder; with 12 siblings it is almost required. Laskins idea came to him as a teenager when he thought of a problem he was having and then a solution that could help solve someone else’s problem at the same time. He wanted to cool off and swim in a pool without paying the high cost and his neighbor was not using her pool that much. Sensing an opportunity, he arranged where he was able to use the pool in exchange for covering part of the maintenance. He realized this idea would be applicable for thousands of pools and got to work. By scanning Google Earth around his area, he started cold-calling pool owners and on a spreadsheet, the early version of Swimply was born.

The genius behind Swimply is that it is not merely a listing platform but has the dual benefit of helping a homeowner with expensive upkeep on underused spaces and enabling renters with affordable access to recreational activities. Because of its success, Swimply has not stopped at pools, but has expanded into tennis courts, backyards and even private music studios. With millions of bookings and tens of millions of dollars across 3 different continents, the growth of Swimply has been simply remarkable.

The most impressive thing about Bunim Laskins is the grind, work ethic, and refusal to quit. He had the amazing opportunity to go on Shark Tank, and even after getting rejected by the Sharks, he still went back to the drawing board and used that to improve his business. Starting with the manual labor of looking at satellite maps and putting names on a spreadsheet to a venture-backed business operating at international scale; this modern-day tires-to-sandals business idea is taking the nation and the world swimply by storm.

I find it really cool that he used such a simple problem, such as people not being able to afford a pool, but wanting to use one, in order make an entire business of simply time-sharing pools. It really makes me wonder what other problems are so in our faces that we might even miss the opportunity to capitalize and make a business.

I think this business venture is super cool. I like how it all started, by him getting the idea and then cold calling potential customers, I think that takes a lot of nerve and commitment that a lot of people don’t have.

This is really impressive. I would have never even thought of doing this since i would have felt not many people with pools would be open to doing something like this but i am obviously wrong. The name of the company is also simply amazing.

This is a great idea. Interesting that so many people would be interested in doing this for their pool. It is also cool that he has expanded it to tennis courts, backyards, and even music studios.
