Felix Finkbeiner – Plant-for-the-Planet

Sparked by an elementary school project when he was nine years old, Felix Finkbeiner grew passionate about the issue of climate change and deforestation. From there, he founded his organization Plant-for-the-Planet, inviting fellow children to plant a million trees with him. They managed to hit that milestone a little more than three years later.

Today, Plant-for-the-Planet is an established nonprofit business with team members is eight different countries including Germany, Felix’s home country and where the idea was born. The organization has many ambassadors in more than seventy other countries as well. This organization continues to encourage young people to restore forest ecosystems for the good of the future.

Since its beginning, the company has made great strides in expanding their initiative. In 2012, Plant-for-the-Planet launched “The Change Chocolate”, a product that guaranteed one tree would be planted every five chocolate bars they sold. Their next launch would be their platform pp.eco, a free to use platform that allows people to donate tree-planting projects anywhere in the world. That platform was launched in 2019. Their latest one, launched in December 2024, is the EUDR Tracer which allows people to research the environmental impact of supply chains. For example, if one wants to know the environmental impact of consuming coffee from Mexico versus the United States, they will discover the U.S. is a little more forest friendly than Mexico.

To make things better, Plant-for-the-Planet was awarded the UN SDG Action Award in 2024, an award presented by the United Nations to organizations that show Sustainable Development Goals. Not only does Felix’s organization have a valuable impact on the environment, but the diversity of those involved in the organization’s mission is monumental. I find nothing more innovative than joining nations together for one common mission: to save the very Earth they all share.

Felix Finkbeiner’s story is truly inspiring because it shows how one young person’s passion can grow into a global movement for change. His ability to turn a simple school project into an international effort to combat climate change demonstrates incredible leadership and vision. The organization’s continued innovation and global collaboration prove that meaningful environmental action can start at any age.

I think this is so cool because he loves something and he is chasing that dream. I think there is one thing that is cooler though that he is using his dream to make a difference in the world.

I thought that the way he promoted the every five chocolate bars sold was interesting because it was a great way to get people to buy something they wanted while giving him money needed to keep planting trees in return.
