Ama Amo-Agyei – Plantmade

We assume that great companies begin with grand visions. But Ama Amo-Agyei’s story suggests something different: sometimes, a major brand starts with a simple solution to a problem millions quietly share. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ama Amo-Agyei was laid off, which was stressful but pushed her to start her own business. Ama’s problem was hair loss. Her solution was a natural mixture of oils inspired by her Caribbean and African ancestors.

Plantmade was started with £100 (she lives in the UK). This meant no extensive ad campaigns, no PR stunts, no employees. And yet, Plantmade thrived because it worked. News of the effective hair-loss product spread quickly through word of mouth and excited health influencers. Although Ama’s company hit £1 million in its first year, Plantmade’s rise was anything but smooth. The biggest hurdle came in the form of a cease-and-desist over the brand name; a sudden halt that could have undone the momentum. But Ama treated the pause the same way she once treated being laid off during lockdown: as an opportunity. While production stopped, she rebuilt her systems, refined the brand, and untangled the trademark battle that threatened to end her company.

In five years, Plantmade had grown to £11 million in value, £89 million short of Ama’s goal. After a year of heavy losses, Ama needed help from investors. While Plantmade received funding, Ama stepped away from her business as the new investors restructured company ownership and strategy. In an official statement posted on November 3, Ama writes: “Thank you for witnessing my journey as a Black girl who grew a multi-million-pound business from the ground up and broke barriers for entrepreneurs alike. I hope my story reminds you to pay the cost of embarrassment and chase your dreams anyway.”

Ama’s path suggests a simple pattern: treat setbacks not as endings, but as openings.

Wow that is incredible how she grew the business by starting with only 100 pounds and no ad campaigns.

Absolutely inspiring and a lesson to all of us that you don’t need to come from great wealth to start a business.

I think that this is such an incredible story! I love how she decided to take a problem she was struggling with into her own hands! Even when she was laid off, she kept on going and created her own work. That is a story of a true entrepreneur!
