Matthew Maloney : KneeHab Academy

Matthew Maloney was a former student-athlete at Clemson University. He played football, studied Management, and later earned a Master of Business Administration. During his football career, he tore his ACL and went through five major surgeries, which eventually forced him to medically retire from Division I football at Clemson.

Soon after graduating from college, Maloney founded Kneehab Academy. The business now serves over 200 active clients and has worked with more than 1,600 clients overall. Kneehab Academy helps young athletes recovering from knee injuries through one-on-one coaching, specialized workout routines, and a community of athletes who have gone through similar injuries. Maloney has also built an audience of more than 300,000 followers on Instagram, which has helped him grow an impressive business shortly after college.

What makes his business especially interesting is what drives him. Maloney experienced serious knee injuries himself, so he understands the frustration, uncertainty, and difficulty of the recovery process. Because of that experience, he is well equipped to help other athletes facing similar problems and can relate to them in a way that many people cannot.

I think his idea is great because it works alongside physical therapy rather than trying to replace it. It adds coaching, training, accountability, and community to the recovery process, which creates value for the athlete while also creating a strong business opportunity. I also think his story shows how personal experience can become an advantage in entrepreneurship.

One of the biggest principles I learned from Maloney is to look at past pain points as possible business opportunities. Because he personally experienced the problem, he understood how serious it was and was in a strong position to create a solution. His story inspires me to pay more attention to problems I have experienced personally and think about whether those problems could become opportunities to help other people.

His business story is definitely a prime example of how a personal problem can be turned into a solution for many! We tend to think our problems in life are unfair and rare to us, but really, there are a lot more people dealing with the same struggles. And when we can realize that misconception and take action on it, we can create an impact far bigger than ourselves and the struggles we may be facing.

This is a great story of how someone wants no one to go through a similar pain they had to endure. He identified a pain he had and aimed to help others get through the mentally and physically demanding recovery process. This is a good example of the entrepreneurial process we talk about in class, identifying a pain, figuring out how it affects people and finding the causes. This could help me look deeper into my elevator pitch. Since I’ve dealt with numerous shoulder injuries, I’m developing a shoulder brace and stabilizer.

I like your point about how he works alongside PT instead of replacing it. The value PT offers is just getting cleared to participate in a sport, but the journey is not over after being cleared. After being cleared you have to regain confidence in your body and its ability to move how you need it to. He solves that gap by providing a service that is still relevant after the PT ends, so athletes can continue to gain confidence on the field.
