Joseph Daniel

Joseph Daniel is a 22-year-old Duquesne University graduate from Youngstown, OH who built an app named “JumpIn Pitt” which allows users to check for Pittsburgh’s best venues, unlock member discounts, and see what’s going on tonight in the Steel City. He is using his app as a platform where local independent restaurants can showcase themselves and hold promotions through the app to increase foot traffic. Joseph has also been doing contracted advertising for various restaurants in the Pittsburgh area to aid them in getting more eyes on their products. He spent countless hours building the prototype for the app and running it by classmates, roommates, and other people in his fraternity. He was doing all of this as a full-time college student and now works at BNY and is continuing this entrepreneurial path to help the local independent restaurants get an advantage over the larger, well-known chains. Joseph has a desire to help local restaurants because his parents own a local pizza parlor in Youngstown, OH. He’s seen firsthand the special treatment the larger, national chains get compared to the leftovers the independents get. Larger restaurants get better pricing from distributors, earlier access to deals, and more advertisement or recognition from the distributor or other promoters. His app is unique because it combines social media, promotions, and keeps users updated on Pittsburgh life. I have learned from him that helping others is most important. He puts the clients first and cares that they are thriving and succeeding, something I’ve learned to adopt in my lawn care business. There were times where I would rather have golfed with my friends or spent time with my family, but when my client called me for help with a fallen tree, I put their needs above my own.

I think that this is a great innovation. It is not super complex or out of the ordinary but Joseph related to personal experience what it was like to own a small business or restaurant in a city and was able to help bring more recognition and advertising to them while also providing value to college students and residents in the Pittsburgh area. As a Pittsburgh native, this is definitely helpful and something that I would use the next time I go downtown or towards Oakland.

I really like how Joseph’s business idea comes from something personal to him. Since his parents own a local pizza shop, he understands the challenges independent restaurants face compared to larger chains. I also think it is impressive that he built and tested the app while being a full-time college student. your point about putting clients first stood out to me too. that mindset can make a huge difference in any business because customers are more likely to trust someone who genuinely wants to help them succeed. He also worked hard while he was young which is admirable.
