Yinz Got Vintage?
$1 to $125. That’s the profit Christian Meskanick made as a teenager after finding a Michael Jackson T-shirt at Goodwill and reselling it online just 24 hours later. What started as a single thrift store find eventually became The Closet, one of Pittsburgh’s best-known vintage clothing stores and a destination for collectors, sports fans, and anyone searching for a piece of nostalgia.
Opened in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, in December 2021, The Closet has built a reputation for its curated collection of vintage apparel, especially Pittsburgh sports culture. Inside the 500-square-foot store, customers can find everything from old Steelers and Penguins gear to vintage hats, T-shirts, and decades-old memorabilia. The store reflects Christian’s passion for nostalgia, with displays of Space Jam collectibles and VHS tapes of classics like Home Alone and Dumb and Dumber.
Christian has capitalized on the growing popularity of vintage fashion and secondhand shopping among younger generations. Rather than competing with traditional clothing retailers, he recognized that customers wanted something more unique. Christian turned years of thrifting and flipping clothing into a business that connects people with pieces of Pittsburgh culture. Christian has scaled The Closet through social media promotion, attracting more than 55,000 followers on Instagram and over 1.2M likes on TikTok.
As someone interested in entrepreneurship, branding, and building businesses around personal passions, I find Christian’s journey inspiring. When the opportunity arose to open a storefront, he chose to pursue his business rather than continuing his virtual college classes during the pandemic. His willingness to take that risk and bet on himself demonstrates an entrepreneurial mindset that few people act upon.

This is very fascinating Burtt. I am a big fan of vintage items and thrifting, basically all my clothes are thrifted, so I think I would really like what Christian is selling. What a grand idea from such a young entrepreneur.
Top blog! I’ve been a consumer of The Closet for a while now, but I never really knew how it all began. I enjoyed reading your article and learning more about how Christian Meskanick started selling vintage clothing. Boomerang and The Closet should collaborate in the future.
Nice post Burtt, lots of people like vintage clothes, and its a good idea to capitalize off that!
