Trey Stewart: Default Happiness
As a freshman on the BYU basketball team in 2022, Trey Stewart decided to start a business that helped others spread awareness for the things they cared about, called Default Happiness. As a teenager Stewart had gone through his share of struggles with mental health. When asked about his mission for his business, Trey stated, “My goal with this is to change the stigma around mental health in sports to where it can be comfortable for players to talk about. When I was a kid I struggled and I still do.” Default Happiness is a printing company that customizes shoes and other apparel with personal mantras and messages. Stewart was able to start his business because in 2021 the NCAA changed their rules and permitted student-athletes to generate revenue for the first time. Trey was a trailblazer in that regard as the first athlete to start and own a name, image and likeness enterprise. Stewart has created custom clothes and shoes with different athletes across BYU sports. He even had the opportunity to create a piece for NBA legend Dwayne Wade. Trey has left his impact on the BYU community both on and off the court, from helping the Cougars reach the Elite 8 of March Madness in his senior year, to spreading happiness and hope through his business. Since graduating, Stewart has been playing basketball overseas in Germany and is now the Creative Director at Woodn Grail, an apparel business that primarily makes college sports hats. Although Default Happiness no longer seems to be a running business, it has opened many doors for Trey Stewart and given him opportunities and memories he will never forget.

I love this! It’s great to see someone innovate in a field that they care about, which also gives others the platform to do the same. All while playing basketball, crazy!
This is a very inspiration story. It shows the value of having passion and motivation. It is admirable just how much he is involved in and how effective he is as well. I am glad he was able to be productive in what he liked to do.
