Lucie Macleod – Hair Syrup

Lucie Macleod is a 26-year-old from Pembrokeshire, Wales. She has her own haircare business called Hair Syrup. She was in university during the COVID lockdowns when she started her hair care business. She has made close to £6.5 million: that is the equivalent to around 8 million U.S. dollars with her business. She appeared on Dragon’s Den (a UK TV show), also. She did get rejected by all of the investors; however, the exposure made her business even more popular.

She had her idea because her own hair was very damaged. All of the products she tried weren’t doing anything for her. Because of this, she decided to create her own hair care. Inspired by hair care routines from Thailand, she made her product from natural oils. They were DIY in her parent’s house. Keep in mind, she was doing all of this while still at her university. Once she shared her products online, her hair care went viral. That is what gave her the idea to start her business. Within a year she had already made about 13,000 U.S. dollars. All of her products were all natural and cruelty-free.

I think it was very inspiring to see how Lucie came from basically nothing as a broke university student, to having her own successful hair care business. I learned that you can make a business off of your own personal problems because, most of the time, you are not the only one who has this problem. I also learned that proper marketing and advertising can help a business grow. With the growing popularity of social media platforms, many businesses can advertise their products much faster, and taking advantage of that can really change the game for you. It is fascinating that someone in college made a successful business from basically nothing.

I think Lucie’s story is super interesting and inspiring because it seems like she didn’t give up even in the face of much adversity. Making a new and successful business while in university during Covid and after being rejected on a TV show is a crazy comeback story. I think we can learn from this that a lot of the small inconveniences we face on a daily basis should not stop us at all but only make us stronger.

Lucie’s story is so empowering because she was able to handle both going to university and starting her own brand. The fact that it was originally just something for her and then she shared about it and it became a need for people with hair just like hers is very interesting because we never know what might help us can help thousands of other people.
