Smart coffee? A new innovation in the market of coffee machines.
The Auroma Brewing Company, also known as ABC Smart Coffee, is an innovation in the market of coffee makers that was founded by three young entrepreneurs in the 2010s. The three students, Pawin Wongtada, Rayan Al-Shaibani, and Ornicha Srimokla, became addicted to coffee and met during their time studying at the University of British Columbia, Canada. They had tried a number of coffees during their time in college, but they had a cup once that was so good it stuck out to all three of them. They decided to make it their goal to recreate this delectable flavored cup. All three of the parties involved in the creation of this coffee maker had interests in entrepreneurial startups. The first step they had to accomplish was securing the funding that was necessary for this project. Being college students who had to work to get to the places they were at, they picked up extra part time jobs in order to be able to buy what they needed for the prototype. After an immense amount of saving, they were able to start brainstorming ABC Smart Coffee and what their prototype model would look like. The three young adults set out with the basic value proposition of wanting to make the best cup of coffee that was more than just grinding beans and pouring hot water over it. Efficiency also played a factor in it, as they wanted a quicker way to be able to make a good cup of coffee. Their system involves an app that allows the person brewing the cup to set the factors on the machine to their exact cravings right from their smart phone. This ranges from a number of factors, such as 150 flavors and how bitter and flavorful the cup is too. Their dedication to the project became a success on the market, due to the unique features the app controlled machine had and how easy it was to make the perfect cup of coffee for any situation.

It’s interesting to see even more machines being controlled by apps nowadays. While I very much encourage the initiative that the students took in designing a new item, I’d be curious to know what it would look like to take things in the other direction and design a coffee machine with a more tactile interface instead. Still, this is a wonderful idea for a design, and it’s very impressive that this was done during college.
