Yun Jung-ha: Revolutionizing the Beauty Industry Through Artificial Intelligence

Before the successful entrepreneur Yun Jung-ha became the founder of Zamface, she worked as the head at the Kakao Hairshop where she got first hand experience in the beauty industry and technology sector. While working there, she realized that there was a huge gap in the beauty industry that needed to be filled. People were looking for more personalized beauty recommendations to their specific facial features and skin tone rather than just general suggestions. As Yun Jung-ha observed Gen-z within the beauty space, she realized that they were gaining their beauty knowledge from online videos instead of from magazines or stores. They would try to use the same product as the beauty influencers use online, but they got different results because they have different facial features, skin tone, and personal color from these influencers. Instead of buying products that work well with their particular features and that enhance their natural beauty, Gen-Z buys the popular, trending products that actually work against their given features.

This was the turning point for Yun Jung-ha that inspired her to create Zamface in June of 2019. Using her background in digital beauty services, she launched the beauty platform that aimed to help users find the beauty products best fitted for their features and skin tone, as well as helping them understand the best makeup application process for their face shape. Today, Zamface relies heavily on AI to provide these services to customers through its face recognition, deep learning, and augmented reality. Due to these abilities, AI is able to analyze selfies and provide custom beauty recommendations to customers. Yun Jung-ha was able to make beauty suggestions far more accurate and accessible due to the use of AI.

Once the platform was established, the business leveraged social media to the utmost advantage to get their name out there. Gen-Z and Millennials, Zamface’s market audience, are both very active on social media, and so Zamface had to actively participate and communicate through platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube in order to reach them. Within the first 4 months, Zamface saw a growth of over 1 million users and they later got up to 2.2 million. From there, Zamface secured 11 billion KRW in investment funding and collaborated with thousands of other beauty brands. Yun Jung-ha and her company are now aiming to become the world’s leading AI-powered beauty curation platform, transforming what beauty could look like for generations to come.
