Fern-YouTube Channel
Fern is a YouTube channel founded by David and Jonas (their last names remain anonymous on their website). Fern has exploded on the YouTube platform over the last two years due to its storytelling-formatted videos featuring semi-live action animations. Fern’s goal is to reach audiences beyond traditional journalism and deliver in-depth reporting that’s grounded in the belief that video is the future of journalism in a modern society.
Their videos are usually between 15 and 60 minutes long, which aligns well with how YouTube’s audience viewing habits have shifted over the past five years. Pre-COVID, viewers preferred shorter, 10-minute videos that packed a lot of information into a brief window. Post-COVID, viewers have shifted toward longer content like Fern’s because it offers greater depth and can be watched on a TV screen rather than just a smartphone. YouTube has seen a drastic rise in content being played on TVs, and Fern’s format fits this trend perfectly.
The key takeaway is that Fern identified an opportunity during a major shift in YouTube’s algorithm and user habits. Since launching in 2023, Fern has amassed over 5 million subscribers and hundreds of millions of views.
However, their rise to fame has not come without setbacks. With the AI boom, Fern faced a wave of AI-generated channels stealing their content. While Fern’s content is accessible and easy to digest, its style is easily replicable. Hundreds of AI channels have copied their thumbnails, scripts, and animation styles without relying on human research or factual accuracy.
Fern directly addressed this issue. Two months ago, they released a video titled “The Death of Educational Content on YouTube.” Using real human fact-checking and thorough research, Fern exposed many of the AI channels that had been plagiarizing their work for months, bringing the truth to light for their viewers. By leveraging their reputation, Fern showed audiences that these low-effort AI channels could not be trusted.
In doing so, Fern tapped into a growing market of viewers who value authentic, human-created content. While AI brings countless benefits, it can also lead to harm through fake educational material. Fern’s adaptability during a massive shift in content consumption makes them stand out as true digital entrepreneurs. They recognized the potential of combining journalism with engaging media, and when AI disrupted their space, they adapted by doubling down on human produced content and integrity.

I love fern videos!!! I had no idea about their story though! Thank you very much for sharing. It’s nice to also see you bring up the issue of AI, especially in that industry.
This is a really intriguing story. It shows how effective Fern is and how he was able to spread awareness of rising misuse of AI. This is very relevant nowadays and should be addressed more often.
Great post! I love watching Fern! I watched their video about AI replicating their content one thing I took away was just how much work goes into each video. There is so much investigative work to validate information that AI cannot do, which separates Fern from its phony imitators. And don’t forget the incredible graphics that are all human made.
